About Us

About Us

The mission of Jefferson Elementary School is to develop internationally-minded students who, through a rigorous program of inquiry, become knowledgeable and caring citizens of the world. Our school is proud to be the first San Diego Unified School District elementary school to be both an International Baccalaureate (IB) school and a STEAM school.

International Baccalaureate (IB) students are members of an innovative global program, which supports the development of well rounded, knowledgeable and inquiring students - both in the classroom and in the world outside.

International and diverse perspectives are embedded in our units so that our students can be mindful global citizens. Students learn to be active participants in real issues by participating in service-oriented activities, while at the same time emphasizing the importance of reflection on a personal and academic level.

The IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) nurtures and develops young students as caring, active participants in a lifelong journey of learning.

STEAM is a collaborative, interdisciplinary, inquiry approach to learning. We cultivate students' curiosity and creativity, empowering them to be change makers in their local and global communities.

STEAM curriculum is driven by the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and supports UTK-5 learners through Project-Based Learning (PBL) . Our projects integrate Computer Science, Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA), Learning for Justice, English Language Development (ELD), and Common Core standards.

STEAM enables students to see opportunities, build empathy, and create innovations with the potential to impact their world in real and powerful ways.
